Tai Chi Chuan Class
Traditional Wu(武)Style

By Master Sunny Xu from Hebei, China

Tai chi chuan (traditional Chinese: 太極拳; simplified Chinese: 太极拳; Hanyu Pinyin: tàijíquán; Wade-Giles: t'ai4 chi2 ch'üan2) is an internal Chinese martial art ,which distinguishes itself clearly from other martial arts in both theory and application. Medical studies have proved its effectiveness in promoting health and longevity. There are many different styles of tai chi chuan, among which Wu-Style is one of the five earliest and most original ones.

Wu-Style Tai Chi Chuan originated with 武禹襄(wu3 yu3 xiang1, 1812-1880),a landowner in China’s Guangfu Town, Yongnian County, Hebei Province, by the end of the Ching (Qing) Dynasty. Because of his great passion for martial arts, he gave up the pursuit of an official career and devoted his whole life to the exploration of Tai Chi essence. As an intellectual of profound learning, he attached equal importance to both actual combat and theoretical summation. His principle and application on Tai Chi Chuan has been regarded as classics benefiting every practitioner.

The movements of Wu-Style Tai Chi Chuan are simple, compact and unhurried. External forms are controlled by internal forces. It is a perfect synthesis of one’s spirit, mind, vitality, and strength. It is one of the best exercise for health, character cultivation, and fighting skills, which suits to the practitioners of all ages.

Instructor: Sunny (Zhijun) Xu, one of the successors of the sixth generation of Traditional Wu-Style Tai Chi Chuan; senior Tai Chi Chuan instructor of Beijing Yi-Ri Association for Eastern-Western Cultural Exchange; assistant professor of Comparative Literature of Hebei University of Science & Technology. He began to practice Shaolin martial arts as a young boy. In 1996, he went to Guangfu, the birthplace of Traditional Wu-Style Tai Chi Chuan, and became a formal disciple to Mr. Zhong Zhenshan, a grand master of the fifth generation. Sunny Xu has rich experiences in teaching culture and Chinese as second language, and Tai Chi Chuan as well.
