Media Advisory: Year of the Pig Festivities

How about celebrating Year of Pig and Iowa's 160 birth year together? The forthcoming Chinese New Year, the Year of the Pig, starts Sunday the Feb. 18th, 2007 after Iowan celebrate its 160 years statehood in Dec. 28, 2006. Iowa joined the Union on Dec. 28, 1946, 160 years ago from today.

To celebrate this traditional Chinese holiday and Iowa's birth year, Iowa's Chinese community is launching a series of events for more than two months ranging from cultural exhibitions to live performances in the greater Des Moines area. All free and open to the public.

The celebrations kick off with a cultural exhibition at Iowa State Capitol between 10:00am and 4:00pm starting on 28th, Dec. 2006, until Jan. 15, 2007. Among the exhibits are award-winning pig posters created by local artists, and also painting, posters and photography about Iowa history, people, places, and icons by Iowa artists.

1:00-6:30pm, Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007, a whole afternoon program will be held at Northview Middle School (1010 NW Prairie Ridge Dr., Ankeny, 515-965-9700), including children activities, door prizes, cooking demo, art demo, dance, music, songs, and yoga, martial arts, arts and crafts, and the exhibits of the award-winning dog posters created by local artists, paintings, calligraphy, paper-cuts etc. and also painting, posters and photography about Iowa history, people, places, and icons.

A two-and-hour staged performance starting at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007, in the Auditorium of Ankeny High School (1302 N Ankeny Boulevard, 515-965-9630) presents the Iowa citizens with an extravaganza of dance, music, songs, drama, and comic dialogues. All free and open to the public.

"We're doing this so that people will have places to go during this important festival," said Ying Sa, Vice President of Wellsfargo, Advisor and Life-Time Member of the Chinese Association of Iowa.
